7 - Visual Cues

In this entry, I am going to provide multiple images that exemplify the movement visual cue over color, depth and form. Each image could be argued from one of the other cues surely, however I found the movement in them to be particularly prevalent.

These images all focus on Implied and and Apparent Movement (terms as provided from Lester 47).

In the first two images, we can see that movement has been captured by film, however the depth of the photo is lost because of blurring. We can see that both the man's birds and the dog's fur are being preserved in motion, and we can feel that they are being pushed around in their environment. In the photo of the man, color is also removed as a piece of the photo because of the black and white film. No elements of form are particularly strong in either of the images

The next three images I have chosen are examples using non-photographic imagery. This helps to avoid other cues that one could say play an important part and focus only on the cue at hand.

In the first, we can feel the person jumping through the sky and the birds flying around them. This imparts a feeling of movement from falling and flight, and is perhaps the clearest form of movement cue that I could find.

The second provides a similar effect as we can see the wind whipping at the girl's hair and 'feel' the wind pushing the duo up the hill.

The third image is the most illustrative of movement in the non-photographic form that I have provided. It shows the waves crashing down towards the ships as they battle to stay afloat.

The last to photos clearly are aided much by the color cue as well (and depth in the last), and so I have provided them with the explanation of why they can be seen for their movement cue. In reality, images can be seen in a vantage point from nearly every cue and it is rare to find one that perfectly relys on only one cue. The blend of cues is what makes the image come together, and is what brings the image to life for the viewer.
